Using the 2002 TACDL DP CD |
Most words in
Blue Fonts, which roll over to red are hyperlinked to additional information
that is just a
click away. Much of the hyperlinked information is on the CD, however
there are numerous links to Internet sites, which often are identified
with an
"I." "I" indicates that you must be on the Internet to connect to the information. You may click the X in the extreme top right corner of the screen to return to the initial start screen. The CD for the TACDL 2002 Death Penalty Conference is designed to open a minute or so after the CD is inserted in the CD drive. After inserting the CD, be patient for a minute or so, then first you will see the desktop screen quiver for a half-minute or so before an hour glass indicates that the opening page is soon to appear. When the initial page opens, there will be various options, which can be activated by clicking on the buttons. |
The "View Presenters' Material" option opens to a schedule of presentations at the conference. By clicking on the names of the presenters or the subject of the presentation written in the blue font you will be able to access to various materials of the presenter. The other option buttons are self explanatory and open to indexes, which are linked to additional materials. |
The materials contained on the CD are viewable with an
Internet browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, which program automatically initiates itself, if the browser is installed
on the computer. Internet Explorer 6.1 is presently the best browser for
viewing the CD. If a computer does not
have an Internet browsers installed, one can easily be installed, even if
the computer does not access the Internet. If downloaded, Internet
Explorer, a product of Microsoft, is free or it is available on a CD for a small fee,
if you cannot access the Internet with the computer to download it.
See The CD contains links to thousands of pages of material, which are contained on the CD; these documents are viewable without access to the Internet. The CD also contains links to tens of thousands of pages of other documents that must be accessed with access to the Internet. Obviously, if you are not connected to the Internet when using the CD, the Internet links will be unavailable. As links change after the publication of the CD, some of the Internet links will become inaccessible. If you encounter an Internet link that is inaccessible, you may be able to find an update to the material or a substitute by stripping off the end of the URL address. For example, http://www.coolinfo.com/index.shtml#1018038188 is a daily publication, which is outdated. By stripping the end off the URL and entering http://www.coolinfo.com in the browser address space you will be able to enter the web site and search for the desired information. |
MAC USERS |
If you need to view the CD with a MAC computer, this is possible with a little more effort than the instruction above for using the CD with a PC. |
MAC users should insert the CD, then, when the name of the CD, 2002 DP Info, appears on the desktop, click on the CD. This click on the CD title will allow you to view the folders and files. Next, click on the file, which is named 2forMACcomputerSTART. This will open a page of options, which makes the CD as accessible for MAC users as it is for PC users. Just as when used with a PC, the MAC computer must have a browser installed. Either Internet Explorer 4 or later, the best, or Netscape will do the job. |
Trouble Shooting |
The most likely problem to occur is the AutoRun feature will not open the CD when it is inserted in the CDROM drive. This problem is in all likelihood due to the fact that the computer has the AutoRun feature disabled. It is very easy to enable this feature. |
Enabling the AutoRun on your Computer, if it is not Enabled |
When the AutoRun feature is enabled on your computer and a CD is inserted, Windows searches the CD for a program named "Autorun.exe." This program is on the TACDL 2002 CD. If the AutoRun file is found, Windows automatically runs the program. To enable the AutoRun feature on a computer, with the program disabled, go to Control Panel/ System/ Hardware Tab/Device Manager and display the properties for your CDROM (this path may vary between Windows versions). From the CDROM Settings Page, enable the "Auto insert notification" setting. If you have trouble, refer to Windows Help to enable AutoRun. If you ever wish to temporarily disable the AutoRun feature, simply hold down the Shift key when you insert a CD. |
Using the CD without AutoRun |
If you choose not to enable the AutoRun feature or have trouble enabling the AutoRun, the CD can be easily viewed in several other ways. First, you may wish to go My Computer and click on the CDROM drive. Also you may go to Start, then Run, then browse for the CD and click on 1stSTART file. If you choose not to go to My Computer or Run, you may click on the CD drive using numerous other methods such as right clicking on "Start" and then click on "Explore." However you go to the CD, you will see folders and files contained on it. As these folders and files appear, click on the 1stSTART file. |
Installing the Entire CD on a Hard Drive |
While the CD require no
installation on the hard drive, the entire content of the CD can easily be
installed on a hard drive. The disadvantage of this type of installation
is that the contents of the CD consumes a large amount of space on the
hard drive. The advantage is that the content is accessed more quickly if it is
on a hard drive and the content can be easily modified to personalize the
content, if it is on a hard drive. To place the content on the hard drive, first establish a folder on the hard drive to place the content. Then, left click on "Start," then click on "Explore" or "Explore All Users." Place the CD in the CDROM drive as you hold down the Shift key to keep the CD from opening in AutoRun. Open the content of the CD in the Explore pane by clicking on the CD. Then, under "Edit" click on "Select All" and copy the content of the CD. Next, click on the folder you have created to place the content of the CD. After locating and clicking on this folder you should see an empty pane on the right side. Next, click on "Edit" and "Paste." Find something to do for ten minutes while the copying is being done and then give it a test. Sometimes, it is best to copy and paste the CD in segments, rather than copying the entire CD with one Copy and Paste. |
